Arturo Herrera
You are here
22.03.2018 - 09.06.2018
Over the past 18 years, Herrera has developed a multi-layered body of work - collages, wallpaintings, paper cut-outs, felt works and paintings - that explore the complex legacy of abstraction. Using modernist strategies of fragmentation, re-composition, seriality and often employing found materials from popular culture sources, the artist addresses the legibility and resonance of abstract forms. Combining and juxtaposing a broad array of references and methods, the works suggest a non-linear narrative filled with associative meanings. Using recycled aluminum litho plates as ready made grounds for mixed media collages, all works in the exhibition simultaneously reveal the entrails of their own making through accumulating layers in a variety of media. The lithographic plates and collaged fragments blend their own history into a new visual and conceptual entity. Rich and pliable meanings are played out through the ambiguity of figurative and abstract sources. You are here marks Herrera’s first solo exhibition with the gallery. Other recent solo exhibitions include Paintings, Sikkema Jenkins & Co., New York (2017 – 18); Soave sia il vento, Galleria Franco Noero, Turin (2016); Faculty Band, Thomas Dane Gallery, London (2015); Day Before, Tang Museum Saratoga Springs (2015). Herrera’s 2017 site specific installations can be found at the Officine Grandi Riparazioni / OGR in Turin; Bloomberg European Headquarters in London; and at the West Elm building at8366 Beverly Boulevard in Los Angeles in conjunction with the exhibition How to Read El Pato Pascual: Disney’s Latin America and Latin America’s Disney organized by MAK Center for Art and Architecture. In 2016, Tate Modern commissioned Herrera to create a long-term wall painting for the sixth-floor restaurant. Herrera was born in Caracas, Venezuela, in 1959, and received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Tulsa and MFA from the University of Illinois at Chicago. He currently lives and works in Berlin. You are here markerer Herreras første soloudstilling i galleriet. Seneste soloudstillinger omfatter herudover Paintings, Sikkema Jenkins & Co., New York (2017-18); Soave sia il Vento, Galleria Franco Noero, Torino (2016); Faculty Band, Thomas Dane Gallery, London (2015); Day Before, Tang Museum Saratoga Springs (2015).
