In the exhibition Landmarks, Erik Steffensen (b. 1961) shows a series of works where photography and painting are united in a new aesthetic expression. Steffensen draws his motifs from the Danish landscape: from old grain mills to lighthouses to large stones deposited during the ice age that define where we are, and perhaps even who we are.
Steffensen’s evocative images balance between the documentary and the dreamy. His works revolve around themes such as memory, landscape and existence and often draw on literary and philosophical references. His imagery is characterized by a special calm and simplicity that invites the viewer to contemplation and reflection.
Erik Steffensen is a photographer, painter and author. He graduated from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in 1992 and was a professor there from 1998-2007. His art is represented at, among others, Louisiana, ARKEN, ARoS and the National Gallery of Denmark.
