Jonathan Meese

Jonathan Meese (b. 1970) appeared on the international art scene back in 1998 and is now one of cotemporary art's most successful, trend-setting proponents. He works with almost superhuman energy, creating his works in series. The genesis itself is like a performance in which he works, on a mixture of pre-prepared patterns and complexes of themes and purely spontaneous material, from one work to another. The oeuvre as a whole, however, is based on his drawings, in which he creates the figures, symbols and objects which later become the mythological universe that populates Jonathan Meese's overall work and which draws in the beholder as if by force. Meese has a reputation for unfolding material in a large format in which he positions his mythological figures, collage elements, fields of colour and quotations in a powerful, expressive fashion. Meese's citations often use words and literary quotes that refer to history or constitute ideological and political statements. Back in 2005, he showed a total installation entitled "MOR" in collaboration with Tal R at Statens Museum for Kunst, Denmark's national gallery. In 2007 he was topical at the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art with a major installation which was created as part of the set for a production of "Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg" at the Royal Danish Theatre. His works are represented in numerous public collections, including Museum of Modern Art, New York, Centre Pompidou, Paris and Louisiana in Humlebæk.
