| Over the years the Finnish artist Nina Roos (b. 1956) has worked with oil painting on acrylic panels, where she with several thin layers of oil paint covers the acrylic plate, while still maintaining the transparency. It gives the impression of something simultaneously material and intangible, as they are flat and textureless while at the same time possessing unmistakable depth. At first glance, the works seem very closed in their own intimate and introspective life, but on closer inspection one discovers that they actually involve someone, whoever that is, from the world apart. Here and there one senses a sudden shadow, and you may get a sense of yourself being enrolled in the painting, despite the fact that they were withdrawn from this world. The tensions between the work's emphatic denial of involvement and experience of something very close, gives the viewer a rare experience of being drawn into a world that is not complete his/her own. Nina Roos received the Carnegie Art Award first prize in 2004 and her works are represented in several art collections, including Moderna Museet, Stockholm, Kiasma, Helsinki and Artpace, San Antonio, Texas. |
