Marcel van Eeden | ||||
| ||||
| Marcel van Eeden was born in 1965 in Den Haag in the Netherlands, but lives and works mainly in Berlin and Zurich. Van Eeden is mainly known for the characteristic "noir" drawings that he has created since the beginning of the nineties, and which in recent years he has uploaded every day to the Internet, to the delight of his growing audience. At the age of just twenty, the young Marcel van Eeden decided to work exclusively with motifs that encompassed an inherent indication of the artist's own non-existence. As a result, although his choice of motifs has a rather wide span, he nonetheless restricts himself to motifs, texts and pictorial references which existed prior to his birth in 1965. Van Eeden often produces serial works within a particular concept. For example, the exhibition title “Gruenewald Drawings”, refers to the German renaissance painter Matthias Gruenewald (1470-1528). A large part of this artist's works, including a number of drawings, were unfortunately lost in a ship sinking in the Baltic sea. Van Eeden elaborates further on this event, and in this series creates his own interpretation of the vanished Gruenewald drawings. Van Eeden’s work can be seen in a number of international public collections, including MoMA – Museum of Modern Art, New York; Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, Amsterdam and Louisiana – Museum of Modern Art, Humlebæk. |
