Eve Sussman

Eve Sussman (b. 1961) once said in an interview that she feels uncomfortable about being described as a video artist. Her works do indeed nestle somewhere between video art and film. Several of her film creations emanate from a well-known motif or incident, which has been the subject of interpretation down through the history of art. Take for example her work "89 Seconds at Alcázar" which won an award in 2004 at the Whitney Biennale in New York. This work references Diego Velázquez’ famous "Las Meninas" (1656). Her spectacular grand oeuvre "The Rape of the Sabine Women" (2006) also refers to a historic incident, namely the abduction of the Sabine women, which is said to have taken place in ancient Rome and has since then been a source of artistic expression for artists as different as Peter Paul Rubens, Jacques Louis David and Pablo Picasso. Working alongside gifted photographers, Eve Sussman creates a series of still pictures based on filmic masterpieces so powerful in expression that they stand alone as individual works.
