Eva Schlegel

The Austrian artist Eva Schlegel (born 1960) works with many different mediums: photography, objects, installations, glass and lead. Some of her most characteristic works are her black and white photographs which she transforms from negative and positive film and then transfers onto lead plates, in such a way that they almost seem varnished in blue and green nuances. The chromatic light depends on the quality of the lead which the artist selects with great care. The photographs from which the lead works are created are often taken by the artist herself and include self portraits. In other cases the photographs are found by accident, for example amongst discarded materials in the photographic laboratory. Eva Schlegel’s work therefore appears both conceptual and aesthetic as well as intellectual and sensuous. Eva Schlegel was until recently professor at the Academy of Arts in Vienna. She has participated in several exhibitions and art fairs, such as the Venice Biennale (1995) and Session in Vienna (2005). She is the curator of the Austrian Pavillion in Venice 2011.
